Welcome Back, Old Friends

After a near nine month absence, my ankles have returned this morning.

I caught a brief glimpse of them in the hospital after delivery. And this time I knew to savor the moment.

I distinctly remember after Dylan’s birth, while still in the hospital, being overwhelmed by the beauty of my post-swollen ankles. Unfortunately, those beautiful slim little things didn’t accompany me home from the maternity wing. Instead, my swollen dance partners of the previous nine months followed me home.

This time when my ankles immerged from the swell post-delivery I took some time to admire them, knowing it wouldn’t last long. And I was right. Upon returning home they again ballooned to mammoth proportions. I breathed a heavy sigh, kept my legs elevated, drank plenty of water and waited for my ankle bones to appear again (you know, those cute little bumps on the sides of your ankles?).

And today they did. Today is a good day. Make no mistake. I still feel like I just had a baby a week ago. But my ankles are svelte again. And really, what more in life is there?

And for those of you who may be wondering, we are all still doing fine. Nicholas is eating and sleeping well. Elijah is completely in love with Cole, wanting to hold him and look at him and play with him whenever he gets the chance. Dylan, poor little guy, is feeling it a bit though – the I’m-not-the-baby-anymore “it”. But he still loves Cole. He comes to sit on my lap ever time I’m nursing, usually with a book to read. I think he just needs to be held a little extra for awhile. And at times, don’t we all?

I'm not even pregnant and I'm wishing I had svelte ankles so I could take a picture. weird feet, I have. the last 2 months they have swelled off and on for no apparent reason.

Svelte ankles? How does THAT feel? I'm still waiting for svelte fingers. I tried on my wedding ring the other day, which I haven't worn since month six. And it STILL doesn't fit....

Svelte ankles! I do have bumps on the side of my feet but they're down around my big toe and they've come from years of wearing "darling" high heels which used to go perfectly with svelte ankles. I am SOOOO jealous!
