Signing Off, Moving Out

We weren’t sure it was going to happen on our desired timetable, but we received word at the last minute that we would in fact be able to close today. However, receiving word at the last minute meant some serious last-minute scrambling.

The truck was already pretty much completely packed, but there was still some cleaning to do. (According to Alexander, a lot of cleaning left to do. I love that man, but his perfectionist tendencies when it comes to housework are epic!) Good thing Dad was here. He saved the day – again! – by taking all the kids over to the park to play while Alexander and I stayed home and cleaned.

Then, after one last movie in the living room, it was time to head out.

We decided to sign the paperwork on our way out of town since the title company was on the way. The moving truck – towing our “commuter car” – was pretty slow, so Dad just went on ahead while we stopped to sign all the documents. (We ended up catching up to him around Dallas.)

I won’t go into details about the signing, except to say that I’m glad I was paying attention. Both realtors and the title company missed a key part of the concessions when they drew up the documents. Without it, we ended up with almost two thousand dollars less than we should have received. The fact that we were being asked to write a check at closing when we should have been getting money tipped me off. I mean, I knew the deal was super lousy on our end, but I also knew that at least we were coming out of it in the black.

Our realtor, after fixing the mistake, turned to me and said, “Wow, it’s a good thing you were here!” You think?!

And after all that, we still didn’t even make it out of Texas – but, almost. We stopped for the night just shy of the Arkansas border. Tomorrow, we will definitely not be in Texas anymore.

Oh, the park! That was a fun place. Glad your Dad took the children for one last playtime there!
Were you wearing your Bucky t-shirt, gnawing through all the closing documents? Mamasmama
