Animal Crackers: A Photo Documentary

Whenever Pa & Nana are around, fun is never far behind. So when they discovered that their local zoo was having a free admission day while we’d be visiting, Nana was all over it. She does such a great job planning fun “experiences” for her grandkids!

Armed with a double stroller, a bountiful snack stash of crackers and clementines, and bundled up from top to toe, – cause baby, twas cold outside! – we headed out to meet the animals.

We stumbled upon the sea lions first and almost didn’t make it any further.

The kids were enthralled with this playful guy and his two pals, who followed him like shadows, in and out of the water.

But the “big cats” were calling, so we pressed on.

After all, cheetahs and lions and tigers (especially the white one that he saw with Grandpa and Aunt Karen) are Dylan’s favorite animal.

As you might have guessed, he was pretty much in heaven!

The monkeys were mostly no-shows because, like I said, it was freezing – even for TX! Our band of monkeys ended up head indoors a few times to escape the cold too.

But with plenty of other animals to see, we weren’t able to stay inside for long.

The giraffes didn’t seem to mind the cold at all. There were at least half a dozen just milling around their enclosure, eating leaves and watching all the funny people who’d come to stare at them.

Of course, the giraffes weren’t the only ones oblivious to the cold – or being stared at either, for that matter.

While we stopped to watch the baby elephant, who’d just had a bath, go straight to a large mud hole and roll in it, Nicholas discovered he was being watched. The poor woman just thought he was cute – I overhead her tell her friend so. That is she did until he turned around and asked her bluntly, “What're you looking at?”

Ah, yes. That’s my boy. At least, with his cute little lisp, she might not have understood him. I can hope, right?

All in all, we had a wonderful trip to the zoo. (And I was worried that our kids had missed out on their seasonal visit.)

Plus, before we left, Pa was able to capture this amazing photograph:

Talk about rare… this zoo allowed an entire family to remain together in captivity!
