Or hummingbirds, if you don’t happen to speak Lijahese.
As you know yesterday was Father’s Day. But what you probably don’t know is that we celebrated a day early (and also almost a month late).
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. But with two toddlers and church services that start at help extra sleep I can get, so he really never gets to sleep in and it really was the only thing he wanted.) I decided I’d make him a great big breakfast too. Look at me going the extra mile.
What I didn’t know is that Alexander had decided to celebrate Mother’s Day on Saturday too (since we were on vacation on the real Mother’s Day and didn’t do anything “special,” though I was of the opinion that the vacation was special enough). Anyway, since a big breakfast and sleeping in were already taken, Alexander decided to surprise me with a hummingbird feeder. I’ve been seeing hummingbirds around our back porch for months but they’re fast little buggers and I’m never able to get the boys corralled fast enough to see them. Very frustrating.
Enter the hummingbird feeder. And some very accommodating birds. And what do you get? Just about the best Mother’s/Father’s Day present ever. Within minutes of putting the feeder up, I kid you not, the birds were already dropping by for a little nibble. We’re able to sit around the table at mealtimes and watch the birds eating too. Lij, who has a good seat for bird watching is happy to shout out each and every arriving bird: “Me See Humming-do!!!”
And that’s the kind of gift I really enjoy. One that the whole family can appreciate.
(Oh, and as an added bonus, Elijah’s time-out chair looks out onto the back porch too. So this morning when he had to do some “time,” I reminded him to be very quiet and maybe he could see some hummingbirds during his time-out. Not once during the entire two minutes did he make a peep. Quite a switch from the hysterical and blood-curdling screams that usually emanate for that seat when he’s on it. Now that’s what I call a gift!)
